Slough Schools PFI to include a 12 place residential unit for children with autism

 

QED, a consortium based around NewSchools and Wates Construction, has begun construction on the scheme to build three brand new schools and community facilities for the town of Slough.

 

The project will mean exciting 21st century schools for Beechwood, Arbour Vale and William Penn Schools, with buildings that will provide the staff and pupils with modern facilities for teaching and learning which they so need and deserve.

 

The £44 million scheme will deliver new sport, leisure, professional development and adult learning facilities. For the first time in Slough, a 12 place residential unit for children with autism will also be provided.

 

Three brand new schools are planned: William Penn Primary School on its existing site, and Arbour Vale and Beechwood School will be co-located on the current Beechwood site.

 

The details of the projects are as follows:
Beechwood School, an 11,700m2 new build replacement school on the existing site to provide accommodation for 750 11-16 pupils plus 150 Post 16 places.

 

Also on the Beechwood site will be:

  • New leisure and community facilities including a swimming pool and sports halls
  • Adult and community learning facilities
  • Slough’s Professional Development Centre for teachers and other school staff

Co-located is the 7000m2, 220 place new build replacement, Arbour Vale School for children with special needs together with a residential unit for young people with autism.

 

The William Penn Primary School - A 2600m2 new build replacement Primary School to be constructed on the existing site to accommodate 420 pupils and 52 nursery places.

 

Both Beechwood School and The William Penn remain fully operational throughout the construction phase with completion scheduled for September 2007 and February 2007 respectively. The consortium will manage the facilities until 2034.
